Someone connected to a lobbyist released a voicemail of the D.C. delegate to Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D, not that the same kind of voice mail hasn’t been left by countless Republicans too), shaking down an industry that is greatly affected by the committee Holmes chairs (though she may not vote on the floor, the District being the victim of taxation without representation) for a financial contribution, in a wounded/threatening tone reminiscent of the Sicilian gangster Don Fanucci in “Godfather Part II” who shakes down a poor merchant by asking for “enough to wet my beak.” Cenk Uygur is almost humorously unsettled by Holmes’ naked venality and the quid pro quo corrupt practices it represents, and I sympathize.
As long as voters, leaders and the news media tolerates this kind of culture, complaints about the unresponsiveness of our elected representatives are laughable. It should be obvious that the first step to a better republic is refusing to tolerate bribery.
Here’s the clip.
Weep.

She comes from one of the safest congressional districts there are. So does Charlie Rangel, Sheila Jackson Lee and a number of non-blacks besides. They can get away with such brazen misbehavior without serious penalty and they know it. In fact, among some constituencies, this is considered more laudable than not! So why should the D.C. congresswoman (whose very office is of dubious legality) worry about other legalities? She represents a city that is so corrupt and violent as to make Chicago look good.
Distasteful, ugly, hideous — politics as usual. Every congressman/woman and Senator is on the take. It’s the only way to get reelected. Until you take the money out of politics, this is what we get. Of course, I think she should be booted just for being an idiot. EVERYONE knows that you ask for your money over a steak dinner at Capital Grille. This is just bad manners.
Unethical is politics as usual.
I need a shower and a hug from a child.
You are absolutely right! Let’s not forget perjury! The legal system is protecting themselves, not the innocent American people. I was actually laughed at. for thinking I could charge an attorney , a plaintiff, and a Judge with perjury. The attorney told me ” Do you know the last time anyone was charged with perjury in this state? (Oregon). He said “I have been practicing law 26 years; everyone knows people lie in court”. Are you kidding me? have we degraded our morals, and ethics as a society to pond scum!? Why do we have laws then? Why do we need judges, courts, and attorney’s? They are the only ones benefiting from the laws they make!
The clip is from 2010 I believe.
It is unbelievable. At first, she acts like she is a utility calling a customer to inform them that they missed a payment and then she acts as if they have insulted her and demeaned her by not giving her money.
