From The “Scared Yet?” Files…Ethics Dunce: Cumulus Media; Ethics Hero: Mark Levin

zipping the lip

It’s interesting, isn’t it? The Washington Post, which has been suppressing news unfavorable to progressives and Democrats for years, delivered a thorough and competent report on conservative Cumulus Media muzzling its hosts regarding doubts about the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

The Post reports:

Cumulus Media, which employs some of the most popular right-leaning talk-radio hosts in the United States, has told its on-air personalities to stop suggesting that the election was stolen from President Trump — or else face termination.

“We need to help induce national calm NOW,” Brian Philips, executive vice president of content for Cumulus, wrote in an internal memo, which was first reported by Inside Music Media. Cumulus and its program syndication arm, Westwood One, “will not tolerate any suggestion that the election has not ended. The election has been resolved and there are no alternate acceptable ‘paths.’ ” The memo adds: “If you transgress this policy, you can expect to separate from the company immediately.

Some comments, in no particular order:

  • This should answer questions about whether conservative media is any more ethical,  devoted to free speech or trustworthy than progressive media. They are all the same, essentially: driven by profit, devoid of serious journalism ethics, integrity, or in cases like this, the brains of an annelid worm.
  • Imagine, Cumulus actually put this in print: to “induce: national calm, Cumulus will manipulate what opinions and substance they will share with the public. Nah, nothing totalitarian about that!
  • Note the Post’s phases “users have promoted falsehoods about election fraud” and “Trump’s lies that the vote was ‘rigged’ or in some way fraudulent.” This is now the media’s standard lie: allegations of election fraud or a rigged/stolen election are false. There has been no definitive determination that the election results weren’t manipulated or that substantial numbers of fraudulent votes weren’t counted. The Ethics Alarms definition of “stolen” or “rigged” is based on the fact that the news media did not report relevant developments inconvenient to Democratic narratives that would have changed the votes of many Americans, like the suspicious influence peddling of Hunter Biden with the knowledge and perhaps assistance of his father. That the news media and social media buried that story (and others) is not a “falsehood,” that’s fact. It is false to say there was voter fraud, but to suggest that there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that indicates there might have been significant voter fraud is fair, and deserves a thorough investigation. (Among the circumstantial evidence is the fact that Democrats do not appear to want such an investigation.) It is false to say, as the President has said, that he won the election, that he could still win the election at this late date, and especially that he won “in a landslide.” It is not false to say that various irregularities may have changed the results in some states.
  • The Ethics Alarms position is that any publication, pundit or individual that says it is a fact that there are not good reasons to doubt the fairness and legitimacy of the 2020 election is 1) lying, 2) an untrustworthy and biased partisan, or 3) a gullible fool.
  • After that edict, nobody should trust a word that comes out of Cumulus media.
  • Any of its hosts who capitulate to such muzzling are cowards, with no integrity, and should not have any listeners at all.

I am not a Mark Levin fan; indeed, I can’t stand listening to him. He epitomizes the “the others side is evil” attitudes that have made public discourse impossible. He is always angry and hurling insults, he brings religion into discussions and issues where it doesn’t belong, and he has an annoying voice. He is still, with all of that, a good lawyer who knows his history, and smarter than his on-air demeanor suggests. Levin gets an Ethics Hero nod here for apparently refusing to knuckle under.

On his syndicated radio program  a day after Cumulus sent its memo, Levin said,

“It appears nothing has changed in 24 hours. Not a damn thing. The never-Trumpers, the RINOs, the media — same damn thing….I’m not stirring up a damn thing. Everything I say is based on principle and mission. Everything is based on liberty, family, faith, the Constitution. … My enemies and my critics can’t say the same.”

Bravo. I hope his colleagues follow Levin’s example.

  1. Yet… when Trump was the Cheerleader to keep people calm about the Covid panic… he’s a liar and deceiver?

My God… I hate to admit it, but I am starting to believe the “conspiracy” theories… maybe it’s real conspiracies and no theory about them?

The left and right ARE the same head of the same ugly snake. (not to say there are not good people in them)

It’s all making more sense now. Why Trump has remained hated. He’s not been bought. Crazy. Even my left Democrat Black friend who has served for 30 years told me “we need him 4 more years, the corruption is so bad, he’s barely made a dent.” and she is NOT republican. She also said most of the normal staffers and workers get in there to serve and have a rude awakening when they see the “politics” and evilness.

Anyway, my point was just that Trump tried to do the same with the Covid scare to keep food supply and all that available. Yet he’s bad.

I hope the good people start to stand. We need to.
